Field Notes

October 2026

Autumn light on the northern coast

The weeks between the end of summer and the first frost are the best time of year for walking the coast. The tourists are gone, the light comes in low over the water, and the paths are quiet enough to hear the gulls.

This month I took the old ferry route and walked back along the cliffs. The notes below are mostly for myself: distances, places to stop, and what the weather did.

Notes on a slow camera

I have been shooting with a fixed lens for most of the year. It forces you to walk closer, wait longer, and think about the frame before you lift the camera. Fewer pictures, but more of them worth keeping.

Three small harbours

Each of the harbours on this stretch has a different rhythm. One wakes up at five for the fishing boats, one only comes alive when the bakery opens, and the third is asleep most of the day.
